A weekly two minute catch-up for members from the
TMF Director's desk
These are some of the things that have caught my attention this week.
A reminder once again about the AGM and Trad Talk which are coming up on Saturday 31 July. As well as the usual (short) business element we'll have a couple of short talks from Help Musicians, Creative Carbon, and Katch Holmes from Knockengorroch festival, a conversation with musician, Christine Kydd on wellbeing, and music from Robbie Greig. 2pm online. The second of our workshops on Making Music with Neurodiverse Groups takes place on Wednesday 28th.
The Young Audiences Group is a collection of freelance artists, producers and organisations from the young audiences sector who are committed to making exceptional work for children and young people in Scotland. They are currently carrying out a mapping exercise to find out about people/organisations creating, producing, or presenting performances made for children and young people. They have two surveys on the go - one for organisations who work with young audiences and one for individuals.
While we're on the subject of surveys, the Scottish Music Industry Association is doing a large-scale survey targeting music professionals working across all sub-sectors of the industry (i.e. not just musicians but production crew, publishers, instrument makers, retailers, teachers etc). The survey is gathering data for its ‘Mapping and Measuring the Scottish Music Industry’ PhD research project in partnership with Glasgow University.
The folks at CMU (Complete Music Update) have produced a comprehensive summary of the Select Committee report on streaming.
Thanks to the excellent Mapamundi Música newsletter from Spain (which is run by the European Folk Network's Araceli Tzigane) I came across this interesting organisation, the Center for Traditional Music and Dance, based New York. The organisation assists New York’s immigrant communities to sustain their distinctive performing arts traditions and promotes cross-cultural understanding by sharing these art forms with audiences across the city. Scope for something like that here?
I'm reading Charles Dickens's Little Dorrit at the moment, a novel which contains one of of Dickens's great inventions, the Department of Circumlocution. Faced with the Creative Europe application form (30 pages before you even start to fill it in) it's a reminder that bureaucracy hasn't changed much in the past 150 plus years.
Delighted to see that the Mull of Kintyre Music Festival is going ahead, with Tide Lines, Claire Hastings, Ross Couper and Tom Oakes among others. Iain Johnstone and his team have been resolute that a festival of some kind would take place and it looks like their determination has paid off. Tickets go on sale on Thursday 29.
This week's earworm is a song by David Ferrard. David was active on the scene around ten years ago but I'm not sure if he's performing any more. Great, distinctive voice.
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Margaret Littlewood, who was a long time student and volunteer with the Scots Music Group and with the Scots Fiddle Festival too. RIP.
All the best
DF
