FROM THE NETHERBOW
Noting that this is Newsletter #114 brings the awful thought that we have been pontificating in this box for the best part of ten years, which seems quite enough. Last month we put up a quote from Gaelic bard, Murdani Mast, which got a good reaction from folk. So we thought that for the next wee while, maybe at least until we're actually back at the Netherbow in Edinburgh's Old Town, something similar would fit the bill - something to reflect on, act on, argue about on the TMF's Twitter or Facebook pages. So first up here's a quote, which might apply to any folk musician, from Chris Wood and Rob Harbron, then of the English Acoustic Collective, from an interview back in 2005.
"If our music does affect people, maybe it’s because it’s their music as well. We haven’t gone off and created the sound we think will have most effect on our audience, we’re playing the music that’s always been here and they respond to that and it feels familiar…When we’re playing we’re not trying to show everyone how clever we are, we’re just trying to give people back their music."
TMF BLOG:
THE ORKNEY SERIES - by Kristan Harvey & Jeana Leslie
This fantastic blog is written by Kristan and Jeana - two members of the band FARA. Make sure you take the time to watch all the episodes in 'The Orkney Series', which you will very much enjoy.
"In August, we began filming a very informal project, only ever intended to last a couple of weeks, which would go on to become ‘The Orkney Series’."
"'The Orkney Series’ began as an idea to take one of our sets of Orkney tunes, head out to the spots referenced in the titles, and film ourselves playing the pieces of music with a very brief chat about the stories behind the tunes, the places, and/or the composers."
"Nineteen episodes later we wrapped up the first series, and brought to an end one of the most enjoyable projects we’d ever worked on."

SPOTIFY ADDS SCOTS AS A LANGUAGE
Award-winning folksinger, and Traditional Music Forum Board Member, Iona Fyfe led the campaign which saw Spotify adding Scots to its list of languages. Scots is one of Scotlands three national languages with over 1.5 million speakers (2011 census) and is recognised as a language by the European Charter for Minority Languages. Iona noticed that despite Spotify listing every other UK Minority Language including Manx, Irish Gaelic, Cornish, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic, Scots was omitted.
“It is a big step forward to be able to pressure a global company to change their language policy and add Scots as a language. Being able to categorise my songs under the correct language of Scots means so much to me, and many other singers. Once we achieve a Scots Language Act, then the legislation will place responsibility unto other companies to correctly recognise the language.” – Iona Fyfe

AMY PAPIRANSKY - DEAR AMY
Released 4th December 2020
Available from bandcamp
“Recording this new song has been like a healing process for me in a certain way. I came up with the idea of writing a song to my younger self after hearing Tom Grennan’s poem on Radio 1. The poem is based on a letter he wrote to his younger self and I found it really emotional. I guess I related a lot to the idea due to certain things that happened in my childhood (which has 100 % shaped me into the person I am today). I am trying my best to keep the ball rolling with my music / song writing despite Covid and after a few conversations taking place this year I have really exciting plans set in place for 2021”.

CATRIONA PRICE & ALEX ROTH - LIGHT SHOW
Released 5th March 2021
Available from bandcamp
"The initial inspiration for Light Show came during the unusually snowy winter of 2010. I was back home in Orkney for the Christmas holidays and the snow lay heavy for days on end, cocooning my parents’ house. The constantly evolving white and blue lights drifting across the huge tree-less horizon of the snow-covered island are seared on my memory. At the time I was studying at the Royal Academy of Music, where I’d begun collaborating with Alex Roth on co-arranged songs. Back in London, we spent a day in the RAM studio and recorded most of the parts for this track. But then, after graduating, our other projects took over and Light Show sat on a hard drive, waiting for the finishing touches, for almost a decade. The coronavirus lockdown provided the perfect opportunity to dust it off, and we’re now delighted to share (finally) our debut single!"
— Catriona Price (FARA)

Norah was a woman of strength and beauty, who nevertheless was vulnerable to poverty, exploitation, and emotional loss.

"At its core my writing is inspired by the Scottish folk tradition of melodies, songs and stories. This is something I have a real passion for and have been heavily involved with for over a decade. I strive to present these tune forms, rhythms and melodic elements on an unconventional canvas, merging them with contemporary jazz harmony, experimental rock and metal textures, ambient soundscapes, improvisation and unusual instrumentation. I write the music that excites me and I hope it will be intriguing and challenging for the listener."
