One highlight of this 2-minute catch up is that Paul Anderson, Fiddler, has got an MBE!
TMF Director's desk
These are some of the things that have caught my attention this week.
A couple of activities from TMF members to highlight. Transgressive North's annual Folk Film Gathering kicks off next week, with films available for streaming throughout the festival. I'll be chairing a couple of the discussion sessions, and I'm particularly looking forward to the film about veteran folklorist, Henry Glassie.
And HebCelt follows up last year's classy online version of the festival with a hybrid online and live offering this year. Good to see An Lanntair's Between Islands project among the live offerings.
Terrible news about the burning of the Iron Age crannog on Loch Tay, which, apart from anything else, was a popular gig (those were the days) with musicians. There's a crowdfunding campaign to help with a re-build.
We trailed the Princess Margaret of the Isles clarsach competition a while back, which was won this week by Fraya Thomsen. You can watch the performances by Fraya and the other participants here.
Edinburgh Folk Club's Carry on Streamin project has raised several thousand pounds for the Paddy Bort Fund, money which has been distributed to musicians struggling in the pandemic. The fund is still open, but Carry on Streamin is moving from its fortnightly format to once a month until such time as live gigs start again.
Nice article about the National Piping Centre's Director of Piping, Finlay MacDonald, tying in with the launch of this year's Piping Live.
That essential source of fieldwork recordings, Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches has had a major website revamp, losing some of the creakier features of the old one. As part of the relaunch they have teamed up with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig to offer a couple of short courses in getting the best use out of the site.
Many congratulations to Aberdeenshire fiddler, Paul Anderson, on the award of his MBE.
To tie in with the Directory of Musicians (which is growing by the week) we have created a Spotify playlist which will change from month to month.
Absolutely no connection to the Directory, this bit of superstar hobnobbing has been on heavy rotation in the TMF office (aka my flat) this week. Eric Clapton and Neil Young solo like they dress.
All the best
DF
